Alphabet Has Its Worst Day Ever, and Tesla Barely Blinks at $403

Alphabet just had the worst day in its history as a public company. The Waymo parent sank 12.64% to $283.82 on Thursday after a third-quarter miss and a deeper cash burn, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.38% with it. Tesla barely blinked. It slipped 0.23% to $403.30, held above $400 for a third straight close, and is still up 7.67% over five sessions. Mobileye fell 9.21% on its own report, while Ford (+3.43%) and GM (+3.93%) had a genuinely good day. In Tokyo, Advantest jumped 6.01% after raising its outlook, and the Nikkei 225 added 705.28 points to 64,659.47.

The top take

  • Alphabet (GOOGL) $283.82, −12.64%. Wednesday’s after-hours slide got worse in daylight. CNBC called it Alphabet’s worst day ever, beating the 11.63% drop from March 2020, and put the damage at roughly $500 billion in market value (CNBC). The quarter brought adjusted EPS of $2.67 against $3.02 expected, revenue of $127.58 billion against $128.22 billion, and free cash flow of negative $9.07 billion, about three times the deficit analysts had penciled in. Capex guidance stayed at $195 billion to $205 billion for 2026, with a “significant” increase promised for 2027 (CNBC). Search revenue grew 12% to $63.35 billion but missed for a second straight quarter, which is the part that spooked people (AP). Alphabet is now down 9.32% for the year. Waymo still drives around on Google’s checkbook, so we’ll keep watching that checkbook.
  • Tesla (TSLA) $403.30, −0.23%. On a day the Nasdaq lost 1.38%, Tesla lost 92 cents. It’s up 7.67% over five sessions and sits at −10.32% for the year. The news flow stayed friendly: the Robotaxi app is now giving first-time riders a free trip in Houston and Dallas (Not a Tesla App), and the new Roadster showed up parked next to the Falcon 9 booster outside SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, which merger watchers noticed (Teslarati). After hours it was $397.09 (−1.54%) at 6:46 p.m. ET on CNBC, which is 7:46 a.m. JST Friday.
  • SpaceX (SPCX) $143.89, −0.92%. Still 6.59% above the $135 IPO price, and the five-day loss has shrunk to 0.59%. After hours it was $140.41 (−2.42%), per CNBC.
  • Mobileye (MBLY) $6.41, −9.21%. The numbers weren’t the disaster the stock suggests. Third-quarter revenue fell 2.4% to $492 million but topped the roughly $477 million consensus, adjusted EPS came in at 11 cents, and the full-year revenue range moved up a notch to $1.995 billion to $2.020 billion (Benzinga). Investors focused on a 5% drop in average system prices, an RBC downgrade to Underperform (Investing.com) and the still-unnamed successor to CEO Amnon Shashua (Globes). It’s now down 38.60% for the year.
  • Ford (F) $12.36, +3.43%, and GM (GM) $85.72, +3.93%. Ford beat with adjusted EPS of $0.49 against $0.41 expected and adjusted EBIT of $2.66 billion, and lifted the bottom of its full-year EBIT range to $10.5 billion to $11 billion (Yahoo Finance). GM had no report of its own and still led our board. It’s up 11.02% over five sessions as the Nasdaq listing story keeps working, with the switch from the NYSE due Nov 17 (CNBC). GM is now +5.41% for the year.
  • The rest of the board. Solar bounced a little after Wednesday’s Enphase trapdoor: SolarEdge +3.54%, Enphase +3.48% to $25.86 and Sunrun +2.29%. Lucid fell 6.16% to $3.20, Serve Robotics 5.96%, Symbotic 4.03% and Albemarle 3.81%. In China EVs, Li Auto lost 2.19%, XPeng 1.50% and NIO finished flat. BYD slipped 2.55% in Hong Kong to HK$68.65 on the day it posted third-quarter results; Reuters said profit growth slowed and missed forecasts (Reuters). Only 8 of our 23 US names closed higher.
  • The indexes. The Nasdaq Composite fell 1.38% to 26,184.72, the S&P 500 lost 0.30% to 7,720.39 and the Dow gave up 132.54 points (0.25%) to 52,342.56 (AP). The Philadelphia Semiconductor index dropped 1.42% to 11,518.20, and Nvidia slipped 0.80% to $213.66.

* SpaceX listed on June 12, 2026, so its YTD figure is measured from the $135 IPO price. † BYD is shown in Hong Kong dollars (1211 HK) because its US ADR trades thinly over the counter; HK$68.65 is about $9 at HK$7.85 per dollar. Yahoo Finance and CNBC agreed on every US close and day % in the table; CNBC’s BYD quote showed the same last price (HK$68.65) but marked the day change as unchanged, so the −2.55% day move uses Yahoo’s prior close of HK$70.45, which matches the HK$70.45 close we reported on Wednesday.

Tokyo corner

Tokyo shrugged off Alphabet’s after-hours slide. The Nikkei 225 rose 705.28 points, or 1.10%, to 64,659.47, and the TOPIX gained 0.29% to 4,003.28 (Kabutan). Advantest did the heavy lifting on our list, up 6.01% to ¥37,030 (about $234). It raised its full-year operating profit forecast to ¥967 billion (about $6.1 billion) from ¥846 billion (about $5.4 billion) on stronger demand for AI chip testers, and announced a buyback (Investing.com Japan, Nikkei). That move also pushed Advantest past Panasonic as the YTD leader on our Tokyo list, +88.59% against +82.01%. Tokyo Electron rose 2.35% to ¥10,035 (about $64) the day before its own report.

Renesas went the other way, down 4.63% to ¥2,956.5 (about $19). Its third-quarter sales of ¥435.2 billion (about $2.8 billion) rose 30.2% and beat plan, but it guided to lower margins for the fourth quarter (Investing.com Japan). Keyence fell 3.57% to ¥76,360 (about $483), and Panasonic Holdings, Tesla’s battery partner, slipped 2.75% to ¥3,683 (about $23).

EV parts had a nice day. Nidec gained 3.44% and Denso 3.29%. Most carmakers edged up too, led by Subaru (+1.51%), Nissan (+1.26%) and Mitsubishi Motors (+1.06%), with Toyota up 0.85% to ¥3,077 (about $19). Aisin was the soft spot at −1.88%. Altogether, 11 of 23 Tokyo names closed higher.

What to watch

  • Fri, Oct 30: Tokyo Electron reports (Nikkei), the Bank of Japan wraps its two-day meeting with a rate decision (BOJ), and it’s Tesla’s deadline to answer NHTSA’s Cybercab review (Not a Tesla App). Tokyo also has to digest the Nasdaq’s 1.38% drop.
  • Sun, Nov 1: U.S. clocks fall back. From Monday, Nov 2, the U.S. open moves to 11:30 p.m. JST and the 4:00 p.m. ET close lands at 6:00 a.m. JST. Chinese EV makers usually post October deliveries around the 1st, so NIO, XPeng and Li Auto get a fresh scorecard before Monday’s open.

The EVX News take

A half-trillion dollars walked out of Alphabet in one session, and the stock that’s supposedly too volatile to own lost less than a dollar. We’ll take it. Tesla has spent three days doing a slow, boring lap around $400, which is exactly what you want after a run. The bigger question for EV and autonomy names is whether the AI-spending hangover sticks to Alphabet or spreads, and Friday’s Tokyo Electron numbers will be the first real read on that from this side of the Pacific.

Prices: Yahoo Finance, cross-checked against CNBC quotes for every US-listed ticker (closes and day % matched exactly; BYD’s day % uses Yahoo’s prior close as noted above), and against stockanalysis.com for Tokyo. Tokyo closes were also spot-checked against Kabutan for the Nikkei, TOPIX, Advantest, Renesas, Keyence, Panasonic, Tokyo Electron, Nidec and Denso. After-hours quotes: CNBC ExtendedMktQuote. Index levels: CNBC, AP and Kabutan. As of market close on Thursday, October 29, 2026 (US close 4:00 p.m. ET, which is 5:00 a.m. JST on Friday, Oct 30; Tokyo and Hong Kong closes on Oct 29).
