Stock Watch: Enphase Craters 16%, Tesla Slips Off $407, Tokyo Chips Keep Climbing

Solar got the trapdoor. Enphase plunged 16.03% to $24.99 on Wednesday after Tuesday night’s miss and soft guide finally hit the regular session, and SolarEdge followed it down 8.30%. Tesla gave back a slice of its two-day $400 rally, slipping 0.80% to $404.22, and SpaceX fell 2.25%. Still, 13 of our 23 US names closed higher, ChargePoint led the board at +5.61%, and Tokyo’s chip names kept climbing. Renesas jumped 7.47% and the Nikkei 225 added 685.82 points to 63,954.19. After the bell, Alphabet sank about 10% in extended trading on a revenue miss and a deeper cash burn, so Thursday may look different again.

The top take

  • Enphase (ENPH) $24.99, −16.03%. Tuesday’s after-hours freefall became Wednesday’s close. Adjusted EPS of $0.41 missed the $0.51 Street number, revenue of $293.3 million missed about $304 million, and fourth-quarter revenue guidance of $225 million to $255 million landed well under the roughly $297 million to $300 million consensus (Investing.com). CEO Badri Kothandaraman pointed to high rates and the expired 30% residential tax credit as the drag on U.S. sell-through, which was up only about 5% sequentially and down 35% year over year (Yahoo Finance). Oppenheimer cut the stock to Perform from Outperform and pulled its target, saying a recovery “is not materializing” (Investing.com). ENPH is now down 21.88% over five sessions and 22.03% for the year. After hours it was barely moving at $25.00 (+0.04%), per CNBC’s 6:41 p.m. ET quote (7:41 a.m. JST Thursday).
  • SolarEdge (SEDG) $29.49, −8.30%. Contagion. First Solar held flat at +0.26% and Sunrun slipped 1.46%, so this was an inverter story more than a panel story. SEDG’s five-day loss is now 11.15%.
  • Tesla (TSLA) $404.22, −0.80%. A quiet session after two big green days. The stock is still above $400, up 4.59% over five sessions and up 3.22% from Monday’s $391.62 close, even after giving back $3.24 today. Year to date it sits at −10.12%. After hours it was $401.30 (−0.72%) at 6:43 p.m. ET on CNBC, which is 7:43 a.m. JST Thursday. Reuters flagged Tesla among the megacaps that limited index gains earlier in the day while chips were rising (Reuters).
  • SpaceX (SPCX) $145.23, −2.25%. Still 7.58% above the $135 IPO price, but the five-day slide is now 8.84%. After hours it was $143.72 (−1.04%), per CNBC.
  • GM (GM) $82.48, +2.41%. Follow-through on Tuesday’s Nasdaq-listing news. The stock is finally green for the year at +1.43%, and its five-day gain is 8.37%. Ford rose 2.05% to $11.95. Lucid added 3.02% to $3.41, Mobileye 2.77% and Serve Robotics 2.72%. ChargePoint led everything at +5.61% to $9.22 and still owns the board’s best YTD number at +38.86%.
  • Alphabet (GOOGL) $324.89, +1.34% into the print, then the air pocket. Regular session was fine. After the close, Alphabet reported third-quarter revenue of $127.6 billion that missed estimates, with free cash flow at negative $9.07 billion as AI spending stayed elevated, and the stock sank about 10% in extended trading to around $292 (CNBC, Reuters). Cloud more than doubled to $30.71 billion, but ads missed and the cash burn got traders’ attention. The table shows the regular close only.
  • The indexes. The Fed held its target range at 3.75% to 4.00%, and the major averages eked out a third straight winning day. The Nasdaq Composite rose 0.27% to 26,549.85, the S&P 500 0.28% to 7,743.98 and the Dow 97.53 points (0.19%) to 52,475.10 (CNBC). The Philadelphia Semiconductor index gained 1.76% to 11,684.00. Nvidia slipped 1.17% to $215.38.

* SpaceX listed on June 12, 2026, so its YTD figure is measured from the $135 IPO price. † BYD is shown in Hong Kong dollars (1211 HK) because its US ADR trades thinly over the counter; HK$70.45 is about $9 at HK$7.85 per dollar. Yahoo Finance and CNBC agreed on every US close and day % in the table; CNBC’s BYD quote showed the same last price (HK$70.45) but marked the day change as unchanged, so the +0.57% day move uses Yahoo’s prior close of HK$70.05.

Tokyo corner

Tokyo kept the chip rally going for a second session. The Nikkei 225 rose 685.82 points, or 1.08%, to 63,954.19, while the broader TOPIX slipped 0.14% to 3,991.71 (Kabutan, CNBC). That split tells you who was driving: Renesas Electronics jumped 7.47% to ¥3,100 (about $20), SoftBank Group 4.65% to ¥4,682 (about $30), Tokyo Electron 4.42% to ¥9,805 (about $62) and Advantest 3.16% to ¥34,930 (about $221). After the close, Advantest reported a strong fiscal second quarter and raised its full-year outlook, with first-half sales up 60.5% year over year to ¥845.2 billion (Advantest). Thursday’s Tokyo open will get the first crack at that.

The robot names stayed green across the board. Harmonic Drive Systems and Nidec both rose 3.56%, Nabtesco 3.15%, Yaskawa 2.35% and Fanuc 1.51%. Panasonic Holdings, Tesla’s battery partner, added 2.71% to ¥3,787 (about $24) and still leads our Tokyo list year to date at +87.15%.

Carmakers were mixed to soft. Mitsubishi Motors fell 1.77%, Toyota and Subaru 1.64% each, and Honda 1.45%. Nissan was flat (+0.04%) and Suzuki managed a 0.72% gain. Sony was the biggest Tokyo loser on our list at −2.78%. Altogether, 15 of 23 Tokyo names closed higher.

What to watch

  • Thu, Oct 29: BYD and Mobileye report Q3, and the Bank of Japan starts its two-day meeting (BOJ). U.S. traders will also be pricing Alphabet’s after-hours slide and Microsoft’s beat.
  • Fri, Oct 30: Tokyo Electron reports (Nikkei), the BOJ announces its decision, and it’s Tesla’s deadline to answer NHTSA’s Cybercab review (Not a Tesla App). U.S. clocks fall back on Sunday, Nov 1, so the U.S. open moves to 11:30 p.m. JST from Nov 2.

The EVX News take

Two very different stories shared Wednesday’s tape. On one side, the solar complex finally ate the Enphase miss it had been putting off, and $25 is a long way down from Tuesday’s $29.76 close. On the other, Tesla is still a $400 stock after a pause day, Tokyo chips are still climbing, and the Fed did exactly what everyone expected. The overnight Alphabet dump is the new variable. If AI spending anxiety spreads from ads and free cash flow into the chip complex, Thursday’s Tokyo open and Friday’s Tokyo Electron print get a lot more interesting.

Prices: Yahoo Finance, cross-checked against CNBC quotes for every US-listed ticker (closes and day % matched exactly; BYD’s day % uses Yahoo’s prior close as noted above), and against stockanalysis.com for Tokyo. Tokyo closes were also spot-checked against Kabutan for the Nikkei, TOPIX, Renesas, SoftBank, Tokyo Electron, Advantest, Toyota, Sony and Harmonic Drive. After-hours quotes: CNBC ExtendedMktQuote. Index levels: CNBC, Yahoo Finance, Kabutan and WSJ (SOX). As of market close on Wednesday, October 28, 2026 (US close 4:00 p.m. ET, which is 5:00 a.m. JST on Thursday, Oct 29; Tokyo and Hong Kong closes on Oct 28).
