Stock Watch: Tesla Reclaims $400 (+4.04%), GM Packs Its Bags for Nasdaq, Advantest Leads a 1,078-Point Nikkei Jump

Tesla is a $400 stock again. Shares rose 4.04% on Tuesday to $407.46, the first close above $400 since July 10, as the Barclays upgrade kept doing laps around Wall Street. That’s +9.47% in two sessions and +9.03% over five. The rest of the board joined in, with 18 of our 23 US names closing higher. GM jumped 5.54% after saying it’s moving its listing to Nasdaq, and Serve Robotics led everything at +11.36%. Tokyo had its own AI bounce. Advantest soared 8.98% and the Nikkei 225 gained 1,078.72 points to 63,268.37, though every carmaker on our Tokyo list slipped.

The top take

  • Tesla (TSLA) $407.46, +4.04%. Monday’s Barclays call is still pulling buyers in. Analyst Dan Levy moved Tesla to Overweight with a $450 target, and Investing.com said the upgrade “continues to reverberate through the market,” with the stock up 2.8% by mid-morning. It kept climbing from there. The bull case also got some fresh fuel from the factory floor. Tesla’s Lars Moravy told Munro Live that the Cybercab line “is currently outpacing our deployments,” and that the line doesn’t run every day because it’s that fast (Teslarati). Texas records now show more Cybercabs than Model Ys in the Robotaxi fleet, as we covered in our Cybercab fleet story. TSLA is still down 9.40% for the year, but that gap was 12.92% on Monday. After hours it was $407.87 (+0.10%) in Nasdaq’s 6:49 p.m. ET quote, which is 7:49 a.m. JST Wednesday.
  • SpaceX (SPCX) $148.58, +1.14%. Anthropic’s IPO filing landed on Monday, and buried in it is a commitment to spend up to $120.5 billion on SpaceX compute through 2029 (our story). SPCX now sits 10.06% above its $135 IPO price and was $148.95 after hours, per CNBC.
  • GM (GM) $80.54, +5.54%. GM will move its stock listing from the NYSE to Nasdaq and expects to start trading there on November 17 under the same “GM” ticker, the company said (GM). The part traders cared about is that a Nasdaq listing makes GM eligible for the Nasdaq-100, and index funds would have to buy in if it gets added (CNBC). The stock is now down just 0.96% for the year. Detroit wants to be a tech stock. Tesla fans may have a few thoughts.
  • Enphase (ENPH) $29.76, −1.98%, and then the trapdoor. Enphase reported third-quarter results after the bell and missed on both lines. Adjusted EPS came in at $0.41 against $0.51 expected, revenue was $293.3 million against $303.85 million, and fourth-quarter revenue guidance of $225 million to $255 million came in well under the roughly $300.5 million analysts wanted (Investing.com). Global sell-through rose only about 1% from the prior quarter, per Benzinga. Nasdaq showed ENPH at $25.14 after hours, down 15.54%, at 6:50 p.m. ET. The table only shows the regular close. Wednesday’s will look very different.
  • The small caps had a party. Serve Robotics rose 11.36% to $2.94, QuantumScape 7.18% to $4.18, ChargePoint 5.95% and Albemarle 5.93%. ChargePoint keeps the board’s best five-day run (+11.49%) and best YTD number (+31.48%). Solar mostly bounced before the Enphase news hit, with First Solar up 4.58% and Sunrun 3.58%. The losers were Lucid (−2.65%), Enphase, BYD in Hong Kong (−1.06%), Li Auto (−0.79%) and Uber (−0.53%).
  • The indexes. The Nasdaq Composite rose 1.18% to 26,477.81 and the Philadelphia Semiconductor index gained 3.60%. The S&P 500 added 0.60% to 7,722.60, while the Dow barely moved, up 15.99 points (0.03%) to 52,377.57. Nvidia rose 0.90% to $217.94.

Tokyo corner

Tuesday was Tokyo’s first full session after Anthropic’s IPO filing, and it went for it. The Nikkei 225 snapped a three-day losing streak, rising 1,078.72 points, or 1.73%, to 63,268.37, and at one point the gain topped 1,400 points (Nikkei). The pricey AI and chip names did the heavy lifting after the Philadelphia chip index jumped 2.8% on Monday, and Anthropic’s prospectus, which showed revenue up about 100 times in two years, got the credit for the mood swing (Fisco via Yahoo Japan). Advantest rose 8.98% to ¥33,860 (about $214), SoftBank Group 4.95% to ¥4,474 (about $28), Renesas 3.63% and Tokyo Electron 3.07% to ¥9,390 (about $59). The broader TOPIX gained a more modest 0.61% to 3,997.37, so this was a rally in the big index names more than a market-wide one.

The robot makers had a clean sweep. Harmonic Drive Systems rose 4.91% to ¥5,340 (about $34), Nabtesco 3.50%, Fanuc 3.21%, Yaskawa 2.76% and Keyence 2.34%. Panasonic, Tesla’s battery partner, added 2.96% to ¥3,687 (about $23) and still has the best YTD number on our Tokyo list at +82.21%. Sumitomo Metal Mining rose 3.19%.

The carmakers sat this one out. All seven on our list closed lower, led by Nissan (−1.87% to ¥262.3, about $1.66) and Subaru (−1.13%). Toyota slipped 0.48% to ¥3,102 (about $20), exactly where it was five sessions ago. Sony fell 1.57% and Denso 1.21%. That made 13 of our 23 Tokyo names green.

What to watch

  • Wed, Oct 28: Advantest reports its fiscal second quarter at 3:30 p.m. JST (Advantest). After an 8.98% day, the bar is set high. The Fed also wraps up its two-day meeting in Washington on Wednesday (Federal Reserve), with the decision landing early Thursday morning in Japan.
  • Thu, Oct 29: BYD and Mobileye report Q3, as we flagged in Monday’s wrap. The Bank of Japan starts its two-day meeting the same day (BOJ).
  • Fri, Oct 30: Tokyo Electron reports (Nikkei), the BOJ announces its decision, and it’s Tesla’s deadline to answer NHTSA’s Cybercab review (Not a Tesla App). US clocks fall back on Sunday, Nov 1, so the US open moves to 11:30 p.m. JST from Nov 2.

The EVX News take

Two days, $35.24 a share. Monday was the analyst note, Tuesday was the follow-through, and $400 is a nice round number to plant a flag on. What we like is that the Cybercab story keeps getting more concrete while the merger talk runs in the background. A production line that has to sit idle because deployment can’t keep up is a good problem, and it’s the kind of problem that shows up in the numbers eventually.
