The Car Without a Steering Wheel Is Now the Majority: Cybercabs Outnumber Model Ys in Tesla’s Texas Robotaxi Fleet

The car with no steering wheel is now the majority. Tesla’s Texas Robotaxi fleet passed 1,000 registered vehicles on Tuesday, and for the first time Cybercabs outnumber Model Ys on the state’s books: 544 to 507, for 1,051 in total.

The flip came with a single batch of 81 new registrations, every one of them a Cybercab, Sawyer Merritt reported from Texas DMV data. The public FSD Database tracker, which mirrors the state’s automated-vehicle list, shows the same split and puts the growth at 248 vehicles in the past seven days and 505 in the past 30. That’s nearly double the fleet in a month.

Three weeks ago the mix looked very different. On Oct. 9, Tesla Robotaxi, LLC had 739 vehicles registered in Texas, 319 Cybercabs and 420 Model Ys, according to TeslaNorth, which went through the same records. Since then Tesla has added 225 Cybercabs and only 87 Model Ys. The Model Y count hasn’t moved off 507 since at least Oct. 23, when we counted 927 vehicles and 420 Cybercabs, and it was still 507 at our F1 weekend count of 970. Cybercabs are now about 52% of the roster.

One caveat worth keeping. These are registrations, not rides. The state list shows VINs, model year, make and model, and nothing about which city a car serves or whether it carried a paying passenger today. Public Cybercab rides are still Austin-only, with Dallas due next month. But Tesla engineers already told Munro Live that the Cybercab line runs faster than Tesla can deploy the cars, and the registry is where that backlog shows up first.

Optimus gets a charging job

Someone has to plug all those cars in. Right now that’s a Tesla employee at the Supercharger, since the Cybercab doesn’t take AC charging and relies on a NACS port hidden in its rear bumper. In the same Munro interview, vehicle engineering chief Lars Moravy and Cybercab lead Eric Earley said Tesla plans to hand that job to Optimus while it builds out wireless charging. “Hopefully, Optimus will help us with that shortly,” they said, as Not a Tesla App reported. They also floated Optimus servicing the cars later on.

Not a Tesla App points out this is the first time Tesla has put Optimus into the Robotaxi workflow, and that the long-term plan is still wireless charging, with an Austin hub planned around 80 wireless pads. A humanoid robot plugging in a car that has no driver is a very 2026 sentence. It’s also a sensible stopgap.

Beach days in Florida

Elon Musk added one more expansion hint on Tuesday. Replying to a post on X saying the Miami and Tampa service areas should include the beaches, he wrote: “Coming soon.” No date and no map yet, Drive Tesla Canada notes. Both zones are inland today. Miami’s launch map, from July 3, centered on Doral and West Miami, and Tampa’s July 21 map stops short of the Gulf coast. They’re also the two smallest zones on Tesla’s list, at 31 and 24 square miles, next to Houston’s new 254.

Tesla has also named Jacksonville, Las Vegas, Phoenix and San Antonio as upcoming Robotaxi cities. At the current pace, the cars will be waiting for them.
