Japan’s registered-car battery-electric sales cooled a little from September’s surge but stayed roughly 3.3 times last year’s level. In October, dealers registered 12,733 BEVs, or 5.9% of the 216,757 passenger cars counted by the Japan Automobile Dealers Association (JADA). Plug-in hybrids added 5,584, for 18,317 registered plug-ins in total.
That’s the honest read of the month. September’s registered BEV tally was 13,440, and the industry’s combined passenger BEV-plus-PHEV figure (kei cars included) hit a first-ever 20,734. October’s kei EV model split is still pending, so we are not inventing a matching all-in total. What we can say from the tables that are out: registered BEVs are still in a different league from a year ago, Toyota and Honda are carrying the domestic side, Tesla’s proxy cooled from the end-of-quarter spike, and BYD’s RACCO kei EV set a brand record.
Registered cars: BEV share at 5.9%
JADA’s fuel-by-maker table for October (passenger registered cars, no kei) puts the market at 216,757 units, up 1.1% year over year. Inside that:
- BEV: 12,733 (5.9% share), YoY index 325.8
- PHEV: 5,584 (2.6%), YoY index 185.9
- BEV + PHEV: 18,317
- Hybrids (non-plug-in): 135,257 (62.4%)
- Fuel-cell: 38
The wider market, registered plus kei of all types, was 381,748, down 3.4% year over year, per JADA’s page 343 summary. EVs are taking share in a market that is not growing.
Who sold the registered BEVs
Toyota led with 4,108 registered BEVs (YoY index 366.5). Honda, riding the new Super-ONE, posted 2,209. Nissan managed 1,312 (index 652.7). Subaru, with the Trailseeker now in the mix, reached 896. Imports (including Japanese brands built overseas) totaled 4,208.
JADA’s brand/model ranking for domestic registered cars (no overseas brands, no kei) names the volume models:
- Toyota bZ4X: 3,142 (rank 22, YoY index 284.1)
- Honda Super-ONE: 2,208 (rank 30), essentially all of Honda’s BEV count
- Nissan Leaf: 1,227 (rank 38, YoY index 818)
- Subaru Trailseeker: 750 (rank 48)
That leaves roughly 966 other Toyota/Lexus BEVs beyond the bZ4X, and about 146 other Subaru BEVs beyond the Trailseeker. Mitsubishi’s Outlander (mostly PHEV) logged 712. Toyota alone sold 4,401 PHEVs.
Tesla proxy and foreign brands
JAIA’s October import flash, as reported by Touch Lab on Nov. 5, put foreign-brand passenger registrations at 17,613, up 0.5% year over year. The “Others” ordinary-passenger line, the usual Tesla proxy, came in at 2,162, up 92.3% from 1,125 a year earlier. That is well below September’s end-of-quarter 3,347, but it is still a record for an October / first-month-of-quarter reading. January through October, the same “Others” bucket sits at 22,337, about 2.4 times last year. Mercedes led the named foreign brands at 3,624, followed by BMW at 2,461 and Volkswagen at 1,928.
Kei: BYD RACCO at a brand-record 607
The light-vehicle association’s October brand flash shows kei passenger sales at 102,056, down 10.4% year over year, and total kei at 132,576, down 10.0%. BYD (RACCO only in the flash) sold 607 units, a brand record, after 442 in September. January through October, BYD kei stands at 1,255.
Pending, and we are leaving the rows blank on purpose: Zenkeijikyo’s model-name confirmation for Sakura, N-ONE e: and eK Cross EV is not out yet (the latest 通称名別確報 is still September). EVsmart’s combined October passenger BEV+PHEV tally, the figure that produced September’s 20,734 headline, is also not out. When those land, the all-in plug-in total will be clearer. Until then, do not treat 12,733 or 18,317 as the full passenger market.
The EVX Take
October looks like a healthy pause after a record September, not a stall. Registered BEV share at 5.9% would have sounded fantasy two years ago, and Toyota plus Honda now account for more than half of those units on their own. For Japanese buyers, the shelf is finally filling out: bZ4X and Super-ONE for registered cars, RACCO for kei, with Tesla still the foreign-brand volume story even in a soft first month of the quarter. The open question is the subsidy calendar into December and early 2027. The numbers already say demand is broader than one hero model. The next test is whether that holds when the incentive math changes.
