Thursday was a rough day for the Musk-verse and almost everything else tied to chips and AI. Tesla fell 10.77% to $343.69 and SpaceX 9.05% to $123.62. Nvidia lost 9.26%, the PHLX Semiconductor Index sank 12.25%, and Lucid and SolarEdge each dropped more than 11%. The bright spots on our US board were Sunrun, up 12.29% after its earnings beat, and BYD, up 4.70% in Hong Kong. In Tokyo, Toyota stole the show: shares jumped 16.68% to ¥3,533 after a strong first-half report and a raised full-year outlook, and the rest of Japan’s carmakers piled on.
The top take
- Tesla (TSLA) $343.69, −10.77%. Worst day in a while, and there was no company bad news to pin it on. The stock got swept up in a broad tech and semiconductor rout that also took Nvidia down 9.26% to $181.60. Over five sessions Tesla is down 14.78% and for the year 23.58%. On the product side, Not a Tesla App mapped Tesla’s real Robotaxi pickup zones in Austin, Dallas, Houston and Fort Worth and found they’re 22% to 41% smaller than the advertised geofences (Not a Tesla App). Voting is also open for the Dec. 3 shareholder meeting at Giga Texas (Not a Tesla App).
- SpaceX (SPCX) $123.62, −9.05%. Now 8.43% below its $135 IPO price. Same chip-and-AI air pocket as Tesla, and still no bad SpaceX news of its own. Separately, SpaceX is inviting early Starlink users to trade their round first-gen “Dishy McFlatface” for a free Standard 4X kit (Not a Tesla App). Five-day: −14.09%.
- Sunrun (RUN) $9.87, +12.29%. The best day on our US board, carrying Wednesday’s after-hours pop into the regular session. Third-quarter revenue hit $1.10 billion (up 52%) and diluted EPS was $0.56, and the storage attachment rate reached a record 75% (Sunrun, MarketWatch). It’s up 30.04% over five sessions. First Solar edged up 0.64% to $195.76, but Enphase fell 8.18% to $28.97 and SolarEdge kept sliding, down another 12.72% to $26.20 after Wednesday’s soft guide.
- Nvidia (NVDA) $181.60, −9.26% and the chip trade. The semiconductor index fell 12.25% to 9,011.14. Qualcomm’s soft handset outlook overnight helped set the tone for the group (Investing.com / Reuters). Symbotic lost 6.58%, Serve Robotics 12.45% and Mobileye 3.93%.
- US EVs and the rest. Lucid gave back Wednesday’s party, falling 11.57% to $2.98. Rivian lost 5.48% to $13.29, GM 3.35% and Ford 1.10%. BYD rose 4.70% to HK$75.70. Albemarle added 3.58% to $98.37 and Li Auto 2.94% to $11.92. Only 5 of our 23 US names closed green.
- The indexes. The Dow fell 1,833.06 points (−3.44%) to 51,523.06, the S&P 500 4.36% to 7,353.73 and the Nasdaq Composite 5.52% to 24,315.00. The PHLX Semiconductor Index dropped 12.25% to 9,011.14 (CNBC and Yahoo Finance).

* SpaceX listed on June 12, 2026, so its YTD figure is measured from the $135 IPO price. † BYD is shown in Hong Kong dollars (1211 HK) because its US ADR trades thinly over the counter; HK$75.70 is about $9.65 at HK$7.84 per dollar. CNBC matched every US close and day % in this table. For BYD, the close matched CNBC and stockanalysis.com; CNBC showed UNCH as usual, and the day % matched stockanalysis.com.
Tokyo corner
Tokyo ran two very different tapes. Automakers exploded higher on Toyota’s results, while the chip and robot names kept getting sold. The Nikkei 225 fell 1,110.73 points (−1.79%) to 61,077.90, but TOPIX rose 1.16% to 3,940.39 because the carmakers carry more weight there (Kabutan). Twelve of our 23 Tokyo names closed green.

Closing prices for Thursday, November 5, 2026 on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Day % is the change from Wednesday’s close, 5-day % compares with the October 28 close, and YTD % compares with the December 30, 2025 close. At ¥157.64 per dollar, ¥1,000 is about $6.34. Spot-checked against Kabutan: Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi Motors, Panasonic, Advantest, Tokyo Electron, SoftBank Group, Harmonic Drive and Yaskawa all matched.
Toyota was the story. Shares jumped 16.68% to ¥3,533 (about $22) after the company reported first-half operating profit of ¥2.191 trillion, up 9.2%, and raised its full-year operating-profit forecast to ¥3.9 trillion from ¥3.4 trillion. Hybrids, a weaker yen and lower tariff costs helped, and net profit rose 26.1% to ¥2.236 trillion — the first April–September increase in three years (Toyota, Jiji via Nippon.com). The rest of the garage followed: Mitsubishi Motors +13.34%, Nissan +10.49%, Mazda +9.33%, Subaru +9.04%, Suzuki +8.88%, Honda +7.98% and Aisin +9.07%.
The AI and chip trade went the other way again. Advantest sank 14.71% to ¥29,485 (about $187), Tokyo Electron 9.42% to ¥8,753 (about $56), Panasonic 9.51% to ¥3,168 (about $20), SoftBank Group 6.77% to ¥3,980 (about $25), Renesas 6.72% and Harmonic Drive 6.33%. Sony was the rare tech green light, up 7.07% to ¥4,211 (about $27).
What to watch
- Fri, Nov 6: Can Sunrun keep any of Thursday’s 12.29%? SolarEdge is still guiding soft, so the split inside residential solar is the story (Sunrun).
- Next week: Lucid’s third-quarter report. Wednesday’s 11.59% jump and Thursday’s 11.57% giveback leave it almost flat for the week into the call.
- Dec 3: Tesla’s 2026 shareholder meeting at Giga Texas — votes are open now (Not a Tesla App).
The EVX Take
Tesla and SpaceX got hit with the same AI/chip broom as Nvidia, not with company-specific bad news. We’ll take the Cybercabs, the Starlink dish upgrades and a December shareholder meeting over one ugly tape. Meanwhile Toyota reminded everyone that hybrids still print money, and Sunrun reminded everyone that a real beat still works. Different movies, same Thursday.
Prices: Yahoo Finance, cross-checked against CNBC quotes for every US-listed ticker (closes and day % matched), against stockanalysis.com for BYD and all 23 Tokyo names (matched), and against Kabutan for nine Tokyo names. stockanalysis.com was still showing stale intraday snapshots for 22 US tickers at publish time, so CNBC was the second source for the US board. USD/JPY: CNBC. Index levels: CNBC and Yahoo Finance; Nikkei and TOPIX: Kabutan.
