Intel had the kind of Friday that gets its own Wikipedia paragraph. The chipmaker fell 28.58% to $65.76 after a weak fourth-quarter outlook, and it dragged the whole chip trade down the stairs with it: Nvidia lost 4.22%, the Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.86% and Tokyo’s chip names got hit before Wall Street even opened. SpaceX slid 6.37% to $134.72, back under its $135 IPO price. Tesla? Down 0.87% to $399.81, still up 7.41% over five sessions. Rivian was the happy outlier, up 6.20% on a strong quarter.
The top take
- The Intel shock. Intel isn’t on our board, but it set the mood for everyone who is. It beat on third-quarter numbers, then guided to fourth-quarter EPS of 25 cents and revenue of $15 billion to $16 billion, well short of the 43 cents and $17.1 billion analysts wanted, blaming a soft PC market and a plant shutdown in Israel. CNBC said it was on track for the worst day since 1974 (CNBC). Amazon’s miss and another round of negative free cash flow didn’t help the “is all this AI spending paying off?” crowd sleep better.
- Tesla (TSLA) $399.81, −0.87%. On a day the Nasdaq lost 2.86%, Tesla gave up $3.49. It touched $387.52 at the low and clawed most of that back, so it closes the week a hair under $400 and is down 11.10% for the year. The company news was the kind owners like: the revised referral program now pays out free months of FSD (Supervised) when a referred driver on a trial subscribes, up to 12 a year (Teslarati; our take is here). After hours it was $399.45 (−0.09%) on CNBC around 6:45 p.m. ET, which is 7:45 a.m. JST Saturday.
- SpaceX (SPCX) $134.72, −6.37%. Rough one. That’s 0.21% below the $135 IPO price and, per Yahoo Finance, the lowest close since Aug 24. Yahoo counts more than $400 billion of market value gone since the Oct 6 peak, with the 1.3 billion shares freed in the Oct 22 lockup expiry still hanging over the stock (Yahoo Finance). The Motley Fool pinned Friday’s leg on Intel, a SpaceX partner, plus a Bank of America note on China as a possible hurdle for a Tesla-SpaceX tie-up (Motley Fool). After hours it bounced to $136.10 (+1.02%). Next big catalyst: Starship Flight 15, expected in November.
- Rivian (RIVN) $12.16, +6.20%. The best number on our US board. Revenue grew 38% from a year ago, the loss came in 14 cents better than expected, the R2 is already its best seller, and Rivian nudged up the midpoint of its 2026 delivery guidance by 1,000 vehicles (Motley Fool). Good for them. Competition keeps everyone honest.
- The chip and autonomy casualties. Nvidia fell 4.22% to $204.64. Mobileye, Intel’s self-driving spinoff, lost 7.02% to $5.96 and is now down 42.91% for the year. Serve Robotics dropped 8.45% to $2.60, Lucid 5.63% to $3.02 and QuantumScape 3.33%. Alphabet slipped another 1.40% to $279.84 after Thursday’s record drop, which leaves it 12.61% lower over five sessions.
- Who stayed green. Only 4 of our 23 US names: Rivian, ChargePoint (+2.91%, now +43.67% for the year), GM (+1.96% to $87.40, up 15.12% over five sessions) and Symbotic (+1.42%). In China EVs, NIO fell 3.31%, XPeng 1.53% and Li Auto 0.99%, and BYD eased 0.58% in Hong Kong to HK$68.25.
- The indexes. The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.86% to 25,437.00, the S&P 500 lost 1.82% to 7,580.07 and the Dow shed 572.25 points (1.09%) to 51,770.31 (closing levels per CNBC and Yahoo Finance).

Tokyo corner
Tokyo got the Intel news first, since Intel and Amazon reported after the US close on Thursday, which is Friday morning in Japan. The Nikkei 225 fell 1,369.36 points, or 2.12%, to 63,290.11, after being down more than 1,900 points at one stage, and the TOPIX lost 0.95% to 3,965.07 (Kabutan, Nikkei). The Bank of Japan held rates and said it will speed up its ETF sales from January, which the market mostly ignored (CNA).
The AI names took the punches. SoftBank Group fell 5.96% to ¥4,481 (about $28), Advantest 5.86% to ¥34,860 (about $221) and Tokyo Electron 5.19% to ¥9,514 (about $60), back under ¥10,000. Harmonic Drive Systems lost 5.78%, Sumitomo Metal Mining 4.61% and Yaskawa 4.02%. Panasonic Holdings, Tesla’s battery partner, dropped 3.67% to ¥3,548 (about $22), though it’s still up 75.34% for the year, just behind Advantest’s +77.54%.
The carmakers barely noticed. Six of our seven automakers closed higher, led by Subaru (+1.70%) and Honda (+1.33%), and Toyota was the lone dip at −0.23% to ¥3,070 (about $19). Aisin gained 1.98%. Keyence rose 2.15% to ¥78,000 (about $494) a day after reporting a 49% jump in first-half net profit and announcing a five-for-one stock split (Nikkei). Altogether, 9 of 23 Tokyo names finished green.

What to watch
- Sun, Nov 1: October delivery numbers. NIO, XPeng and Li Auto usually post monthly deliveries around the 1st. US clocks also fall back that day, so from Monday the 4:00 p.m. ET close lands at 6:00 a.m. JST.
- Tue, Nov 3: Tokyo is closed for Culture Day, and AMD reports. AMD’s call is at 5:00 p.m. ET / 2:00 p.m. PT (Wednesday, Nov 4 at 7:00 a.m. JST) (AMD). After Friday, chip investors will read every word.
- Thu, Nov 5: Toyota’s first-half results at 1:55 p.m. JST (Wednesday, Nov 4 at 11:55 p.m. ET / 8:55 p.m. PT) (Jiji via Yahoo Japan).
The EVX News take
A 28% crater at Intel, a 2.86% Nasdaq slide, SpaceX under its IPO price, and the Tesla bears still couldn’t get the stock to close more than $3.49 lower. That’s what a five-session gain of 7.41% looks like when it has some backbone. SpaceX is the one to watch now. Lockup selling plus a chip scare is a nasty mix, but this stock trades on rockets at least as much as on quarters, and Flight 15 is on the calendar.
